ABSTRACT
Knowledge of the structure of the intervertebral disc and how this relates to its biomechanical function is essential in order to gain an understanding of the injury mechanisms and healing potential of the disc. This chapter details the level of knowledge appropriate to the general orthopaedic surgeon.
