ABSTRACT

Descriptive analysis of gait has progressed from the pioneering days of da Vinci, Newton and Galileo. Borelli, a pupil of Galileo, in De Motu Animalum in 1682, measured the centre of gravity of the body and described the maintenance of balance. In Germany the Weber brothers described the gait cycle in 1836, and in Paris Marey published a study on human limb movements in 1873. Braune and Fischer in 1895, in their work entitled Der Gang des Menschen, determined the velocities and accelerations of various body segments and the contributory forces involved.
