ABSTRACT

Angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels from existing vascular networks. Under physiological conditions, it underlies almost all biological processes of morphogenesis, allowing an adequate perfusion in tissues during growth and development [1]. Further, it is a fundamental step in wound healing, where the regrowing blood vessels bring the necessary nutrients to the injured tissue [2]. Angiogenesis is also involved in pathological conditions such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis, peripheral artery disease, and tumor growth.
