Indications for radiotherapy The oesophagus is arbitrarily divided into the cervical portion (from the lower border of the cricoid cartilage to the thoracic inlet or suprasternal notch) and the intrathoracic portion. The latter can further be divided into upper, middle and lower thirds. Most oesophageal tumours are SCCs.
