ABSTRACT

Owing to the seriousness of the condition, patients should be admitted to hospital and given intravenous broad-spectrum antibiotics (e.g. amoxicillin or cephalosporin) for at least three days. Once the condition settles intravenous antibiotics may be replaced with oral antibiotics for another 2 weeks until the patient is reviewed in the outpatient clinic. Steroids are contraindicated in the presence of infection. Needle aspiration is contraindicated in orbital cellulitis.
