ABSTRACT

In a short chapter, all we can hope to achieve is to highlight the common features of safety and security that might apply to aid workers when working in conflict areas.

● Personal security It is unlikely that you will find yourself in a conflict zone unless you wanted to be there. What I am getting at, is that you volunteered for the work, so you would have given the matter some serious thought. In conflict, there are inherent dangers. You owe it to yourself to know what the dangers are and how to minimize them. When you volunteer, you will see that your contract with whatever organization you are working for mentions at some point that you accept the risks inherent in your work. Before you deploy into a conflict zone any organization worth its salt will ensure that its employees receive security training and detailed briefings on the situation.

What else can you do to help yourself?
