ABSTRACT

Most medical conditions are diagnosed on the basis of an accurate history, thorough clinical examination and necessary special investigations. Vestibular conditions are no exception. Pattern recognition based on the frequency, setting and duration of spells, a neuro-otological examination, audio-vestibular tests supported where necessary by imaging studies will in the majority of cases allow an accurate diagnosis to be made. As previously described, special investigations both support a working diagnosis and also on occasion produce an unexpected result (e.g. a unilateral or bilateral vestibular hypofunction).
