ABSTRACT

Cirrhosis is the most common cause of chronic liver disease and its incidence is increasing. These patients present a signifi cant risk for surgery. Cirrhosis is the end-stage of a number of conditions, including excess alcohol intake, chronic viral hepatitis, haemochromatosis and primary biliary cirrhosis. There is severe fi brosis and nodular regeneration of the liver tissue. Patients may have had a liver biopsy and CT or MRI scan. They may be jaundiced.
