ABSTRACT
Cystectomy is the operative removal of the urinary bladder, usually undertaken for treatment of carcinoma of the transitional epithelium of the bladder, or more rarely for sarcoma of the bladder wall. Preoperative radiation to shrink the tumour may have been performed before a radical cystectomy. Some cystectomy operations are performed for intractable interstitial cystitis.
