ABSTRACT

Gray-scale ultrasonic imaging The transducers/arrays described in Chapter 3 are used to generate and receive ultrasound signals required to form an image. In this chapter other crucial components of an imaging system that generates, processes, and displays the ultrasound signal in an image are discussed. Typically the image is displayed in gray scale. It can also be represented by such formats as rainbow or heated object scale, depending on the preference of the manufacturer and the clinical need. It must be stressed that these images yield mostly information about the anatomy of the object being imaged. There are various modes of ultrasound imaging that have been used over the years. Today, most of the ultrasonic imaging systems are digital in nature. However, for the sake of a better understanding of the principles and architecture involved, a discussion of these instruments in the analog form is more desirable.
