ABSTRACT

There are six muscles for moving the eyeball and one for elevating the upper lid.

Levator palpebrae superioris (3) arises from the orbital roof and passes to the tarsal plate in the upper lid. It contains smooth and striated muscle, supplied by the oculomotor nerve (III) (4) and by sympathetics. Both are required to hold up the upper eyelid. If either is lost, the lid droops (ptosis).
