ABSTRACT

Deep within the neck, neurovascular structures pass between the neck and the thorax or between the upper limb and the thorax. The first thoracic vertebra, manubrium and first ribs form the thoracic inlet that slopes antero-inferiorly, following the slope of the first rib (1). Scalenus anterior (2) is an important landmark. The apex of each lung (3) extends up to the neck of the first rib. Therefore, the apex is above the anterior end of the first rib, and the medial end of the clavicle (4). Structures in the root of the neck, or thoracic inlet, are related to the apex of the lung and pleura.
