ABSTRACT

Nerve entrapment pathology of the foot and ankle constitutes an important yet frequently unrecognized aetiology of foot pain. The more common entities include interdigital neuroma (Morton’s neuroma), tarsal tunnel syndrome, compression of the lateral plantar nerve, anterior tarsal tunnel syndrome (compression of deep peroneal nerve) and compression of the superficial peroneal nerve. It is important to understand the neuroanatomy of the foot and ankle to diagnose and treat these entrapment neuropathies. Treatment modalities range from conservative management with footwear modification designed to decrease pressure on the pathological nerve to surgical decompression or excision.
