ABSTRACT

Molecular and cell biology, immunology and genetics are three rapidly evolving basic science fields that are currently being explored to provide a better understanding of the basic defects underlying musculoskeletal diseases. There is much research and development pertaining to orthopaedics, and the knowledge accumulated in these fields over the last few years is enormous. One chapter could never cover the entirety of these three major fields. Therefore, this chapter addresses only those major topics of each of these disciplines that are relevant to the understanding of musculoskeletal conditions.
