ABSTRACT

Dupuytren’s contracture is a condition of unknown aetiology that affects the palmar fascia of the hand, leading to a progressive worsening contracture of the fingers and potentially loss of hand function. Since its initial description in 1777 by Henry Cline, and a later description of its treatment by Guillaume Dupuytren in 1831 (resulting in his name becoming synonymous with the condition), Dupuytren’s contracture continues to generate widespread interest with regards to its aetiology, pathogenesis and treatment.
