ABSTRACT
This chapter deals briefly with the physiology and pathology of heat and cold. Thermal balance, the difference between heat gain and heat loss, determines our body temperature. The various components of this balance are discussed and the ways that the body defends itself in hot and cold conditions. The processes of acclimatization and adaptation to either heat or cold are also considered.
