ABSTRACT

Much of the attention regarding medical issues at high altitude focuses on the risk of developing one of several acute altitude illnesses and how to prevent and manage those problems. While this is the primary question for most high altitude travelers, it is important to remember that some of these travelers will also have underlying medical problems, such as hypertension, diabetes or asthma. In such situations, it will also be necessary to consider how high altitude will affect these problems, whether it is safe for the individual to undertake the planned sojourn and how best to manage the problem during their travels.
