ABSTRACT

Hot water splashes from a kettle or flashback whilst lighting a barbeque are common, easily recognizable examples of minor burns. Serious burns are fortunately less common. UK emergency departments see approximately 175 000 burn patients per year, 15 000 of whom have to be admitted for more advanced care.1 The burn victim presents difficult challenges. The unpleasant nature of the injury is exacerbated by high levels of distress in the victim, their relatives and often in staff. Burns are life-changing and potentially life-threatening injuries. As with all victims of trauma, appropriate and timely assessment, resuscitation and transfer to definitive care offer the best chance for optimal recovery.
