ABSTRACT
It is important to get the diagnosis of labour right, since this is the fundamental decision on which all subsequent management is based. Diagnosis is based on painful, regular contractions along with one or more of the following:
‘show’
spontaneous rupture of membranes
cervical effacement and dilatation on vaginal examination >2 cm (primipara) or >3 cm (multipara)
