INFECTIONS Abscess Large necrotic abscesses, so familiar in the nineteenth century, are now fortunately rare. Common sites for abscesses include the perineum and fingers —dealt with separately as paronychia-and a reasonable proportion of abscesses seen in primary care will be the result of infected surgical wounds (Figure 21.1).
