ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses physiology and anatomy, investigations, development, structural brain anomalies, seizures, headaches, neuroectodermal syndromes, ataxia, cerebral palsy, neurodegenerative disorders, strode, spinal cord disorders, neuromuscular disorders, psychiatric disorders of nervous system. It provides clinical manifestations, prognostic features, investigations, and management of the diseases. The nervous system can be divided into: Central nervous system (CNS)—brain and spinal cord; Peripheral nervous system – somatic and autonomic nervous systems conveying information into and away from the CNS. The internal carotids and the basilar artery supply the circle of Willis, from which the three cerebral arteries (anterior, middle and posterior) branch. The vertebrobasilar system supplies the cerebellum and brainstem and the cerebral arteries supply the cerebrum. Benign intracranial hypertension is a condition of raised intracranial pressure in the absence of an obstruction to cerebro spinal flow. It may be seen in: Idiopathic in adolescent girls, Steroid withdrawal, oral contraceptive pill, isotretinoin, tetracycline and Head injury.
