ABSTRACT

The Iridaceae is one of the larger families of the Monocotyledonae, and is botanically recognised by a few critical features of the leaves and fl owers. The fl owers are characterized by their colourful perianth, or corolla, with three sepals each in the inner and outer whorl, as well as only having three stamens in the androecium and a mostly inferior ovary. The leaves are recognized by their sword-like shape as well as their edgewise orientation to the stem with both surfaces being unifacial.
