Xylene: (1) An aromatic hydrocarbon that is the basis for many petrochemicals; along with toluene, a key ingredient in unleaded gasoline. (2) Colorless liquid of the aromatic group of hydrocarbons made the catalytic reforming of certain naphthenic petroleum fractions. Used as high-octane motor and aviation gasoline blending agents, solvents, and chemical intermediates. Isomers are metaxylene, orthoxylene, and paraxylene. (3) Xylene is a ¤ammable, toxic aromatic hydrocarbon liquid. Xylene is related to benzene and can be distilled or synthesized.
