ABSTRACT

Introduction The human population of the earth is projected to reach seven billion sometime this year (2011). The alarmists among us are predicting massive shortages of all sorts of natural resources as the demand for them grows. Recognition of coming scarcities was one of the reasons many communities started recycling programs some years ago. Recyclables such as metal cans, bottles, and paper are collected one day a week and garbage another day. These programs weren’t started only because of future scarcity but out of the realization that our landfills are reaching capacity in many areas. The availability of new places for landfills is difficult to find and, when found, is cost prohibitive. There is also revenue to be gained when selling the recycled material.
