The goal of this chapter is to provide suggestions to investigators on how best to cope with the administrative responsibilities associated with the care and use of laboratory animals. These strategies include becoming acquainted with the relevant regulations, developing a proactive relationship with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), writing effective animal use protocols, rapidly addressing noncompliance with animal use regulations, reducing the likelihood that violations of animal care and use regulations will occur in the future, and conducting outreach to minimize the administrative burden.
