All living organisms require a source of energy to run their engines, fuelling the metabolic processes that keep them active and promoting their growth. The primary sources of energy are solar radiation and inorganic chemical reactions such as the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide, ammonium, and ferrous iron. The main source is radiant energy from the sun-only specialized bacteria can tap inorganic chemical reactions as the primary source of energy.
