ABSTRACT
Water is essential for the growth and survival of living organisms. Few vascular plants can survive solely on water taken directly from the atmosphere. Most of the water that these plants use comes from the soil, through their roots. Soil water supply is a limiting factor in most terrestrial ecosystems. Therefore, a consideration of soil properties or characteristics that affect the supply of water to plant roots is essential in assessing ecosystem productivity.
