ABSTRACT
Few data exist in the recent literature describing the effects of large radiation fractions on either tumors or normal tissues. In a discussion of intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), where radiation doses are typically delivered in one fraction, few reports accurately describe tissue responses. Since the field is relatively new, and radiobiological documentation of tissue responses have yet to be clarified, no sound theoretical basis exists for determining tissue tolerances to these high doses.
