ABSTRACT

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is a rapidly developing treatment modality with ancient roots in the speciality of radiation oncology. As of this writing, it is estimated that less than 3000 patients have been treated with IORT worldwide. Most of these patients have been treated in Japanese IORT centers; however, there are now at least 30 IORT centers in the U.S., and a global proliferation of such facilities is being observed.
