ABSTRACT

The need to understand the fundamental concepts describing groundwater ow is becoming increasingly important as groundwater resources become more and more threatened by contamination and overuse. This understanding involves an appreciation of several elds of science and engineering. Without it, we are destined to continue to believe that the movement of subsurface waters is secret and occult, as stated in an 1856 ruling by the Ohio Supreme Court that was not changed until 1984, and to continue to mismanage one of our most valuable, renewable natural resources.
