Think of Smart Objects as things that have memory and won’t forget: Smart Objects preserve the original image data so that you can edit nondestructively. You can bring in Illustrator vector files as Smart Objects and have changes made in Illustrator update automatically in your Photoshop file. You can link and instance multiple layers and use Smart Objects as placeholders for templates.
