ABSTRACT

Production of bioenergy, that being biofuels or renewable electricity, is expected to increase in the near future due to legislation enacted by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. The renewable fuel standard (RFS) (EPA 2007) was an outcome of this legislation. Based on the RFS, 36 billion gallons a year (BGY) of biofuels should be produced by 2022. This standard sets a cap on corn-ethanol production at 15 BGY and requires that at least 16 BGY of cellulosic biofuels be produced. In 2013, 1.3 BG of biodiesel (EIA 2013) and 13.3 BG of ethanol were produced (RFA 2013).
