ABSTRACT

In self-assembly, we want to construct structures one atom at a time, as predicted by Richard Feynman over 50 years ago. We are not quite there yet. e purpose of this chapter will be to discuss nature’s chemical and physical processes of self assembly and provide many examples of their structures. As we recall, the Self-Assembly Age was our prediction for ∼2020 in Chapter 1 (Table 1.1). Since we are in mood for predictions, this chapter will also speculate what the future "brave new world" [aer Huxley 1949] might look like in the 2020s. We will also discuss where technology could take us in the future for 2020+.
