ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Esophageal carcinoma is the ninth most common cancer with a global incidence of 461,000 cases and a lifetime risk of 2%–5%. It is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality due to late symptomatic presentation and hence diagnosis of the disease. The overall poor survival from this disease means that there is a requirement for early, presymptomatic detection so that treatment can be with curative intent.
