ABSTRACT This chapter focuses on the review and characterization of the most common biological markers in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). First, the basic concepts about denition, categories, diagnosis, as well as systems to classify the syndrome are explained, and then the chapter proceeds with the description of the biological markers recognized and accepted by international standards. Finally, the main features of markers currently under testing and developments with potential usefulness in MDS treatment are described. Special emphasis is given to the use of noninvasive markers.
