ABSTRACT

In 2002, the Frontier Simulation Soware for Industrial Science (FSIS)4 project was launched as an IT-program research project organized by MEXT and directed by the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS) of the University of Tokyo. e main objective was to develop world-class simulation soware for industrial science and to ensure Japan’s international competitive position in the following four technological elds: biotechnology, nanotechnology, environment and disaster prevention, and information technology. is project led to systems being developed for quantum chemical simulation, quantum molecular interaction analysis, nanoscale device simulation, uid dynamics simulation, structural analysis, platform of problem solving environment and HPC middleware. Over 100 researchers from more than 20 institutions participated in this project, and the budget amounted to about 3.8 billion yen over 4 years. Eighteen application soware programs were distributed over the Internet since June 2003, and the project was successfully closed in March 2006.
