ABSTRACT

At the national level, a massive BMBF investment in the D-Grid project* (€100 million over 5 years) resulted in a core grid infrastructure for German scientic collaboration. Recently, strong emphasis has been dedicated to HPC soware research projects within the German HPC Soware Initiative under the “IKT 2020 Förderprogramm.” e innovation policy of the German Federal Government is focused on technology developments aimed at scientic and technological leadership, and the integration of novel services. HPC is clearly seen as needed for these goals. e Call for “HPC Soware for Scalable Parallel Computers”

in January  2010 was intended to close the gap between HPC hardware performance and application soware scalability on extremely parallel systems, the major barrier to progress in computational science and engineering in simulation-based HPC applications.
