ABSTRACT

An enhancement is an improvement to an existing system or object. Over time, advances in technology can turn an enhancement into an industry standard, making it difficult to separate anchorage enhancement maintenance from anchorage maintenance. By looking at the experiences of bridge owners in dealing with problems common to the anchorages of suspension bridges of varying ages, span lengths, and service environments, we hope to identify trends and provide general guidance for other owners looking for effective and cost-efficient ways to preserve their bridges. General guidance is the best we can hope for, given the unique character of each anchorage, advances in technology, the small sample size, and bridge owners’ justifiable concerns about disclosing contractual or security-related information. Questions (see the appendix at the end of the chapter) were prepared and distributed to bridge owners. We dealt directly with bridge owners as much as possible to minimize the chances
