ABSTRACT

Suspension bridge anchorage maintenance is a critical part of the overall upkeep of a suspension bridge. While not as challenging as suspender rope or deck replacements, the necessity is equal to that of those projects. The George Washington Bridge (GWB) anchorages have withstood the tests of time due to operational maintenance by the Port Authority of New York/ New Jersey (PANYNJ) (Figure 10.1). Measures such as regular inspection every 2 years, along with more frequent informal maintenance inspections of critical systems such as the cable dehumidification and flood prevention systems, have provided a stable foundation for the bridge. The anchorage maintenance that is discussed in this chapter focuses on the methods and solutions for the George Washington Bridge.
