ABSTRACT

Certain species of leafhopper and planthopper vectors of plant pathogens have been maintained in many laboratories and a variety of methods used by different workers. My own experience has been derived from working with L.M. Black at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, New York in 1947-49, then during the following 12 years with L.O. Kunkel at Rockefeller University,

followed by 12 years at Boyce Thompson Institute in Yonkers, New York. I shall present in this chapter an overview of methods used by me and my associates, as well as some developed by others in Asia, Africa and Australia.
