ABSTRACT

The beet leaf bug Piesma quadratum (Fieb.) (Heteroptera: Piesmatidae) is the vector of the beet leaf curl virus, which belongs to the plant rhabdovirus group. The virus is not transmitted via inoculation of the sap but is transmissible in a persistent (propagative) manner. Typical symptoms of diseased plants are vein clearing of youngest leaves, vein deformation, leaf curl, and growth inhibition (Fig. 1).
