ABSTRACT

The Leland Stanford Junior University opened its doors to both men and women in 1891. It was founded to be avowedly practical, producing cultured and useful citizens. It was built on the beautiful farm developed by Senator Leland Stanford near Palo Alto, California. The architect was Frederick Law Olmstead, the designer of Central Park in New York. The campus is still one of the most beautiful places in America (Figure 12.1). The first president was David Starr Jordan, the former president of Indiana University.
