ABSTRACT

Pre-operative investigations Pre-admission clinic is becoming increasingly a nurse-led service. Protocols are strictly followed to ensure that patient safety is maintained. Blood pressure should be within normal range. Almost all pre-anaesthetic admissions have a full blood count done, especially in gynaecology where women may be anaemic. Where blood loss is envisaged, a blood sample is taken for group and save in case a blood transfusion becomes necessary. A haemoglobinopathy screen is done if appropriate and, if necessary, renal and liver function testing is performed.
