ABSTRACT

ONCOGENES What have sometimes been referred to as ‘recessive oncogenes’ are now more commonly called tumour suppressor genes. Many DNA viruses produce proteins that directly perturb the function of tumour suppressor genes (for example, large T antigen of SV40 binds p53 and Rb; E6 and E7 of the papilloma virus bind p53 and Rb; the E1A protein of adenovirus binds Rb).
