ABSTRACT

We have studied stresses and strains in structural members caused by statically applied loads. In engineering applications, we may have to deal with structures and loadings of dynamic nature, for example, a moving body or a freely falling mass. On the basis of the principal of conservation of energy, it may be assumed that at the moment a moving body is stopped by a resisting structure causing an impact, its kinetic and potential energies are completely transformed into the internal strain energy of the resisting structure. Hence, there are two major dynamic problems to be solved, that is, for the maximum deformation and stresses of the resisting structure at the moment of impact and the vibration initiated by the impact afterward.
