ABSTRACT

All the wonderful “adaptations” and “designs” discussed in this book are outcomes of evolution. Yet, these terms, borrowed from our teleological language, are inadequate, because the underlying Darwinian selection is only concerned with the momentary situation. In principle, the evolutionary process is future-blind and unaware of the history encoded in the genome of every organism. As this is contrary to how we think and act in our own life, we can use only metaphors for description. This is also the reason, why many people have difficulties to accommodate evolution with their faith in a creation where the designs in nature make no sense without foresight.
