ABSTRACT

Many cucurbit vegetable growers are interested in or are converting at least a portion of their production schemes to incorporate conservation tillage practices. No-tillage (NT) is a conservation tillage practice that has been implemented by some cucurbit growers, especially those that grow pumpkins, although it has not been implemented in other cucurbit crops to the same extent. Cucumber and squash are the two other cucurbit crops in which NT has been extensively evaluated, with most research results indicating that yields for these two crops are similar between NT and conventional tillage (CT). Most NT research studies conducted in melons and watermelons either are inconclusive or show a negative inuence of NT on their overall productivity. This review will focus on providing an overview of NT production systems for cucurbit vegetables, as well as complementary management practices that are often utilized in association with this type of production system.
