PLATE 1 Field clearance through Bull dozer and Disc plows before sowing Soybean or Maize in the Cerrados of Brazil.
Note: Such heavy tillage is necessary to clear fields and manage a crop of soybean/maize. It induces loss of surface vegetation cover, opens up soil to nature’s vagaries. It causes rampant loss of soil and nutrients via surface runoff, percolation and emissions. Procedures such as contour planting, bunding, intercropping and planting windrows are some suggestions that reduce loss of top soil and nutrients. Source: EMBRAPA, Sao Paolo, Brazil.
