ABSTRACT

In this chapter I consider some of the ethical issues that arise from the

application of assisted reproductive technology (ART) and in particular

their impact on the future health of those children. Both the range and

application of A R T have increased over the past two decades, with 1 % of

children in developed countries being conceived by A R T 1 . Conception

may now be technically possible for many infertile couples, providing

them and others with a realistic possibility of fulfilling their dreams of hav-

ing a child. However, the physical, emotional and developmental welfare

of children born by A R T is of significant importance, especially as this

group are themselves growing to maturity. They may have questions about

their origins and identity and how A R T itself might have impacted on their

current and future health and that of their own children.
