ABSTRACT

The terms freeze drying and lyophilisation refer to the same process and can be interchanged with impunity. However, the derivations of the two terms differ. Freeze drying is an obvious English language de scription of the process. Lyophilisation comes from the Greek and means to make easily dispersed or solubilised (luo-loosen, pltilosloving). The latter refers to one of the characteristics of most freezedried materials.
